SHERIDAN, WYOMING – April 6, 2025 - A New Standard in Oral Hygiene for Aging Populations
Maintaining daily oral hygiene becomes increasingly challenging with age, particularly for individuals experiencing memory loss or reduced motor skills. Lumoral’s innovative antibacterial aPDT (antibacterial photodynamic therapy) offers a groundbreaking solution for these patients by enhancing the effectiveness of daily dental care routines—even for advanced cases of periodontal disease.
Tackling Severe Periodontitis in Patients with Dementia
A recent case study published in the Dentistry Journal highlights the impact of Lumoral’s dual-light antibacterial treatment in an elderly patient with vascular dementia.
The study focused on a 78-year-old man in Sweden who struggled to maintain good oral hygiene due to cognitive and physical impairments. With the help of a family member, he was able to follow a guided daily routine. At the beginning of the study in April 2021, he had already lost seven teeth and was diagnosed with advanced periodontitis.
Figure 1 (as referenced in the study) revealed numerous infected periodontal pockets and significant gum bleeding. Although initial treatment from a dental hygienist showed temporary improvement, the patient’s inability to manage oral care independently led to recurring issues.
Lumoral Strengthens Daily Oral Care Routines
In December 2021, Lumoral treatment was introduced as a long-term supportive therapy. The patient began using the device every other day for a period of 6–7 months, receiving dual-light aPDT that targets bacterial plaque with antibacterial precision.
The results were transformative.
The number of deep gum pockets reduced dramatically from 43 to just one, and the clinical attachment level of his teeth improved significantly, reflecting better gum health and reduced infection. The light-activated therapy provided the stability and antibacterial support that standard mechanical cleaning alone could not achieve in this case.
Complementing the Treatment with Lumorinse Mouthwash
A core component of the Lumoral method is Lumorinse mouthwash, a plaque-binding rinse that enhances the photodynamic therapy process. Unlike chlorhexidine-based rinses, Lumorinse does not disrupt the mouth’s natural flora. Instead, it binds specifically to plaque, allowing targeted treatment when activated by Lumoral’s dual-light system.
The interaction between the dye in the mouthwash and the dual-light aPDT enables localized antibacterial effects, efficiently reducing infection without systemic side effects. This combination has proven crucial in supporting individuals who are unable to maintain oral health through brushing and flossing alone.
Effective Recovery from Stage IV Periodontal Disease
The 13-month follow-up period revealed a significant improvement in the patient’s overall oral health.
Only one infected periodontal pocket remained by May 25, 2022, and researchers noted that it might have been influenced by occlusal trauma, rather than persistent bacterial infection.
Figure 2, presented in the case report, visually confirmed the success of the Lumoral treatment in halting the progression of stage IV periodontal disease and supporting the restoration of oral stability in a complex case.
Backed by Peer-Reviewed Research
The findings are detailed in the publication “Repeated Daily Use of Dual-Light Antibacterial Photodynamic Therapy in Periodontal Disease—A Case Report” by Trujillo et al., 2022.
Additional scientific validation is provided by Nikinmaa et al. (2021) in their study titled “Indocyanine Green-Assisted and LED-Light-Activated Antibacterial Photodynamic Therapy Reduces Dental Plaque.” Both studies emphasize the safety, efficacy, and practicality of incorporating Lumoral into daily home care routines, particularly for high-risk patients.
Supporting Vulnerable Patient Groups with Precision Technology
Lumoral’s dual-light aPDT system is setting a new benchmark in non-invasive, patient-friendly oral care. For elderly individuals and those with neurodegenerative conditions, this technology provides a valuable tool to maintain oral hygiene independently or with caregiver support.
By empowering patients and caregivers alike, Lumoral is helping bridge the gap between clinical treatment and daily dental care, especially for those most in need.
