Montefiore Unveils $9.68M Bronx Labor and Delivery Renovation

Bronx – October 15, 2026 -- Montefiore Einstein has unveiled a renovated labor and delivery suite at Jack D. Weiler Hospital, funded by a $9.68 million grant from the New York Statewide Health Care Facility Transformation Program.

The Weiler Mother Baby Unit, on the sixth floor at 1825 Eastchester Road, received a redesigned workflow and capital upgrades to its L&D rooms, maternal surgical suite, and triage and waiting areas. Five of six construction phases are complete. The final phase covers the last two L&D rooms and a back service elevator upgrade, and is planned for completion in early 2027. The work proceeded in phases with no interruption to patient care.

Weiler Hospital adds triage bays and a dedicated C-section recovery unit

The modernized triage area now has six triage bays and one evaluation triage bay. The maternal surgical suite includes a dedicated C-Section Post-Anesthesia Care Unit with four bays, and the three Delivery Room Operating Rooms were upgraded. L&D rooms now have ensuite bathrooms, and the clinician team station has been reconfigured.

Lighting was enhanced throughout the unit. Montefiore Einstein also invested in remote monitoring tools for patients and clinical teams and introduced new food options.

Hospital serves as the Bronx's only regional perinatal center

Angela Gonzalez-Perez, Vice President of Operations and Executive Director of Jack D. Weiler Hospital, said the facility is the only regional perinatal center in the Bronx. It treats the highest-risk pregnancies across the Bronx and part of Queens.

Rodney Wright, M.D., Vice Chair of Obstetrics, said the technology upgrades and redesigned workflows equip the team to handle the most complex cases.

Department adds 26 physicians under Chair Mark Einstein

Mark H. Einstein, M.D., became the Chella and Moise Safra Endowed Chair and Department Chair of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women's Health in 2024. Under his leadership, the department has onboarded 26 new physicians specializing in areas including critical care obstetrics, adolescent medicine and onco-fertility. It has also added nurse practitioners and physician assistants.

Clinical services continue to grow. They include universal depression screening in the hospital, collaborative care with reproductive psychiatry, and a specialized postpartum outpatient clinic for individuals with medically complex or high-risk pregnancies. A cardiac maternal medicine program is also expanding. Einstein's leadership team helped design the new unit.
