Brooklyn, N.Y. – September 18, 2026 -- it's electric has been selected by the City of New York and the New York Power Authority to build a permanent curbside electric vehicle charging network spanning all five boroughs, replacing the city's pilot infrastructure with 700 chargers over the next three years.
City expands charging points eightfold from current pilot network
The NYC Department of Transportation's PlugNYC program will grow from 88 Level 2 charging points to 700 under the contract, procured through the Department of Citywide Administrative Services in partnership with the New York Power Authority.
Chargers designed in Brooklyn, manufactured in Queens by Boyce Technologies
it's electric, headquartered in Brooklyn's Navy Yard, designed the charger hardware with industrial design firm Billings Jackson Design; production will occur in Queens through manufacturer Boyce Technologies, keeping the supply chain within the five boroughs. Maverick Corporation will handle engineering and construction, while SWTCH Energy supplies the network's backend platform.
Network targets 80,000 rideshare drivers lacking off-street parking
New York City counts more than 80,000 rideshare drivers, the majority of whom park on the street rather than in garages or driveways. The company cites this as the primary barrier to EV adoption among TLC and rideshare drivers, and the buildout will prioritize neighborhoods with high concentrations of these drivers and limited off-street parking.
Infrastructure underpins city's 2030 Green Rides mandate
New York's Green Rides initiative requires all Uber and Lyft trips licensed by the Taxi and Limousine Commission to be electric or accessible by 2030, part of a broader OneNYC target of an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. "Just as fire hydrants are on every street, our vision is for EV chargers to become that normal," said Nathan King, co-founder and CEO of it's electric.
Company closes oversubscribed bridge round, lifting funding to $15 million
Alongside the contract, it's electric closed an oversubscribed bridge financing round led by Halogen Ventures, with participation from Wisdom Ventures, Future Communities, E8 Angels, DiPalo Ventures, Alumni Ventures and Gaingels, plus returning investors Uber, Failup, Gratitude Railroad and The Partnership Fund for New York City. The round brings the company's total funding raised to date to $15 million.
