East Hartford, Conn. – September 24, 2026 -- Pratt & Whitney has delivered its first aircraft powered by the new GTF Advantage engine to United Airlines, an Airbus A321XLR, marking the commercial debut of the upgraded engine platform.
GTF Advantage doubles time on wing versus current engine model
The GTF Advantage features an upgraded hot section that Pratt & Whitney says will deliver up to twice the time on wing compared to today's GTF engine, along with 4-8% more takeoff thrust for extended range. The company calls it the most advanced hot section in the single-aisle engine market.
Pratt & Whitney to convert entire PW1100G-JM line to Advantage spec by 2028
The GTF Advantage is fully intermixable and interchangeable with the existing GTF engine, allowing airlines like United to operate combined fleets without added complexity. Pratt & Whitney plans to transition its entire PW1100G-JM production line to the Advantage specification by 2028.
Existing GTF operators can capture up to 95% of durability gains via retrofit
Airlines currently operating the standard GTF engine will be able to access up to 90-95% of the GTF Advantage's durability improvements through the GTF Hot Section Plus (HS+) upgrade for the PW1100G-JM engine. The upgrade option becomes available for incorporation during maintenance visits starting early next year.
Rick Deurloo, president of Commercial Engines at Pratt & Whitney, said the delivery marks a new chapter in a relationship with United that spans nearly a century, noting the GTF Advantage is particularly suited to the long-range A321XLR. Ankit Gupta, United's Senior Vice President and Chief Air Operations Officer, said GTF-powered aircraft are helping the airline reduce fuel burn and improve reliability as it expands its route network.
