Samfara Acquires Danish Controlled-Substance API Maker Chr. Olesen Synthesis

London – October 02, 2026 -- Samfara has completed the acquisition of Chr. Olesen Synthesis, a Danish manufacturer of controlled-substance active pharmaceutical ingredients, marking the London-based life sciences investment firm's first deal. The transaction sees Samfara buy the business from Chr. Olesen and funds managed by Signet Healthcare Partners, with Chief Executive Thomas Moestrup co-investing alongside the new owner. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Chr. Olesen Synthesis supplies opioid-disorder and ADHD treatment ingredients globally

Based near Copenhagen, Chr. Olesen Synthesis develops and manufactures APIs and advanced intermediates specialising in controlled substances, including buprenorphine for opioid use disorder and lisdexamfetamine for ADHD. Its cGMP-certified plant in Hvidovre has been in commercial production since 2015, supplying pharmaceutical companies across Europe, North America and the Middle East.

New Samfara-backed syndicate includes European and North American investors

The acquisition is backed by a syndicate of European and North American institutional investors and family offices. Jean-François Hilaire, former CEO of Unither and former EVP at Recipharm, advised Samfara on the deal and will join Chr. Olesen Synthesis's board as Chair.

Chr. Olesen built the unit into a controlled-substance API player since 2011

Mads C. Olesen, Chief Executive and owner of Chr. Olesen, said the company acquired Chr. Olesen Synthesis in 2011 and, together with Signet Healthcare, grew it into a significant player in controlled-substance APIs. He said the timing was right for new ownership to take the business forward.

Samfara partners target expansion into new markets organically and via acquisitions

Samfara Partners Helena Malchione and James Cocker said the company holds a strong position and reputation in a demanding segment of the pharmaceutical market, and that growth will come through existing customers and expansion into new markets, both organically and via acquisitions. Moestrup said the new ownership structure would support continued development of customer relationships and business expansion.
