Helm, Calif. – September 07, 2026 -- Sixteen drivers at J.R. Simplot's Helm, California facility have voted to join Teamsters Local 431, launching a first-contract fight at one of the world's largest agribusinesses.
Drivers haul hazardous agricultural chemicals across Central Valley farms
The unit transports herbicides, pesticides and insecticides to retail customers and farms throughout the region. Workers hold Class A Commercial Driver's Licenses with hazardous materials hauling endorsements, a specialized credential required to move regulated agrochemicals on public roads.
Union cites unmet promises on pay and benefits
Driver and Local 431 member Manuel Martinez said management had made "empty promises about wages and benefits" for years, and the union vote now gives workers leverage to hold the company accountable. Fellow driver Jose "Pepe" Servin, a former Teamster, said he sought the union for its track record on wages, health care and retirement benefits.
Local 431 moves toward negotiating a first contract
Justin Scott, Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 431, said the drivers were "ready to put in the work" after months of organizing and are now positioned to negotiate their first collective bargaining agreement with Simplot. Local 431 represents more than 2,700 members across Fresno and Madera Counties.
