Skanska Wins $271M Contract to Rebuild Coast Guard Pier in Rhode Island

Stockholm – October 02, 2026 -- Skanska has signed a USD 271 million (approximately SEK 2.5 billion) contract with NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic to construct a new homeport pier at Naval Station Newport in Newport, Rhode Island. The deal will be booked in Skanska's U.S. order intake for the third quarter of 2026.

New Pier Replaces Aging Infrastructure at Active Navy Installation

The project calls for the demolition of the existing Pier 1, which measures approximately 30 meters by 482 meters (100 feet by 1,580 feet). In its place, Skanska will build a smaller, modern pier spanning roughly 24 meters by 305 meters (80 feet by 1,000 feet), engineered to berth four U.S. Coast Guard Offshore Patrol Cutters.

Scope Includes Utilities, Dredging and Bulkhead Construction

The new facility will feature critical support infrastructure for docked vessels, including new electrical substations, water and wastewater connections, and a compressed air system. Additional work covers approximately 8 meters (290 feet) of new bulkhead, site improvements, dredging and underground utilities.

Construction Underway, Completion Set for March 2030

Work on the project has already begun, with completion anticipated in March 2030.
