Jersey City, N.J. – September 22, 2026 -- Soltage's 55 Drive battery storage facility, New York City's first such asset from the independent power producer, discharged at full capacity during peak summer demand this year, completing its second full operating season on the Con Edison network.
New York's reliability margin has collapsed to 417 MW, down from 2,227 MW in 2018
The New York Independent System Operator reported the drop heading into this summer, the lowest margin in recent history. NYISO has flagged reliability needs in New York City over its five-year planning horizon, with the state targeting 6 GW of storage capacity by 2030, prioritizing downstate projects.
55 Drive delivers 4.6 MW and 18.4 MWh directly into a constrained Con Edison circuit
The facility connects directly to a Con Edison distribution circuit and discharges during peak-demand periods, reducing stress on the local distribution system during the highest-demand hours of the year.
Soltage has six additional storage projects under construction across New York City
The six projects total 30 MW and 120 MWh, with a further 115 MW and 460 MWh in advanced development in the city. "Two operating seasons is the point at which a distributed storage asset stops being a projected grid resource and becomes a true infrastructure asset," said Jesse Grossman, Chief Executive Officer of Soltage.
Distribution-connected assets are sited inside the neighborhoods they serve
Dirk Van Ouwerkerk, Senior Vice President of Storage Development, said the projects strengthen the local grid where and when it is actually constrained, positioning Soltage as a long-term partner to Con Edison and host communities. Robin Gray, Chief Technical Officer and Senior Vice President of Engineering and Operations, said the deployments set a benchmark for storage builds in other capacity-constrained U.S. markets.
Soltage's New York City storage program sits within a national development portfolio exceeding 2 GW across the United States.
