Traditional laminated stand-up pouches restrict water vapor transmission, trapping moisture that accelerates microbial decay in cucumbers. Packers have historically countered this by macro-perforating the film, but that sacrifices modified atmosphere protection, speeds dehydration, and still allows condensation to form. StePacPPC's Xgo pouch integrates three functions -- modified atmosphere, modified humidity, and condensation control -- into one film structure, according to CTO Gary Ward.
Wholesum Family Farms reports up to 29-point quality gain in shelf-life trials
Wholesum Family Farms, Inc. tested the Xgo pouch over 16 days under simulated supply chain conditions before launching its Lil' Ones Organic Baby Cucumbers snack packs in 8 oz. formats. The pouch delivered a 29 percentage-point advantage in overall quality for organic baby cucumbers versus a top-seal alternative, and a 10 percentage-point advantage for organic mini cucumbers versus traditional macro-perforated packaging. Wholesum attributed the gains to reduced moisture, decay and mold, alongside improved product visibility.
Exotic fruit packers adopt the pouch to avoid clamshell repacking costs
Packagers of lychee, pitaya, rambutan and longan are also using Xgo pouches to manage condensation during temperature swings in transit, an issue that typically requires manually wiping clamshell lids after fluctuations. Florida-based Freshway Produce, Inc. now uses the PAZ pouch exclusively for its exotic fruit line, packing at source in final retail format and eliminating repacking costs upon arrival in the U.S.

Ward said the company offers Xgo pouches with variable WVTR films tailored to the specific moisture-control and atmosphere requirements of individual produce items and supply chain conditions. StePacPPC will showcase the pouches at IFPA in Orlando, Oct. 15-16, at Booth #2933.
