SHERIDAN, WYOMING – Dec. 7, 2024 – Telebras, a leading telecommunications provider in Brazil, has partnered with SES, a global leader in satellite-enabled solutions, to deliver high-speed internet access to over 1,500 remote communities in Brazil's Northern Region. This initiative is part of the GESAC program, a federal government project aimed at promoting digital inclusion and bridging the digital divide across the country.
SES-17 Satellite: A Powerful Tool for Connectivity
Leveraging the advanced capabilities of SES's high-throughput SES-17 Ka-band satellite, the partnership has successfully connected public institutions, schools, libraries, healthcare facilities, and indigenous communities that previously lacked reliable internet access.
"SES-17 is a geostationary satellite that offers an optimised solution for accelerating digital inclusion programs across the region, which offers full coverage over Brazil and the rest of Latin America," states the press release.
Managed Enterprise Solution: Ensuring Seamless Connectivity
SES's Managed Enterprise solution provides a comprehensive approach to connectivity, encompassing the operation and maintenance of the entire network, including the satellite, gateways, and remote sites. This end-to-end solution ensures seamless and reliable internet access for the connected communities.
Bridging the Digital Divide: A Shared Commitment
Both Telebras and SES are committed to bridging the digital divide and promoting digital inclusion across Brazil. By providing internet access to underserved communities, this partnership is empowering individuals, enhancing education, and improving healthcare services.
"Telebras has extensive experience in digital inclusion, and we have long been an ally of remote and underserved communities by bringing information and communication technologies that promote digital access and progress," said Frederico Siqueira, President of Telebras. "As part of this project, we will do much more because digital inclusion enhances access to citizenship."
Empowering Communities Through Connectivity
The impact of this initiative extends beyond simply providing internet access. By connecting remote communities, Telebras and SES are fostering economic growth, promoting social inclusion, and empowering individuals with access to information and opportunities.
"Brazil has made significant progress in recent years in improving the population’s access to the Internet, but there still room for improvement on the reach and quality of the services covering some low-density population areas in the country," explained Omar Trujillo, Vice President of Enterprise Americas at SES. "We are delighted to support Telebras as part of the GESAC Program and at the same time contribute to the social advancement of communities that historically had little or no connectivity."
Satellite Technology: A Key Enabler of Digital Inclusion
This partnership highlights the vital role of satellite technology in bridging the digital divide, particularly in regions with challenging terrain or limited terrestrial infrastructure. SES's advanced satellite capabilities and managed services are enabling Telebras to extend connectivity to even the most remote corners of Brazil.
"Satellite-enabled solutions play a fundamental role in reducing the digital divide especially for those areas and communities," emphasized Trujillo.
A Partnership for Progress
The collaboration between Telebras and SES exemplifies the power of partnerships in driving digital inclusion and empowering communities. By leveraging their respective expertise and resources, these companies are making a significant contribution to the social and economic development of Brazil.
