Jiaxing, China – September 09, 2026 -- The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York has invalidated two patent claims Kaneka Corporation asserted against Cocrystal Technology (Jiaxing) Co., Ltd., ending a nearly three-year dispute and clearing the way for unrestricted U.S. sales of Cocrystal Tech's ubiquinol ingredient, now branded CrysQnolTM.
Court finds Kaneka's patent lacked utility and enablement
In a Memorandum and Order dated September 2, 2026, in Kaneka Corp. v. Cocrystal Technology (Jiaxing) Co., Ltd. et al., Case No. 1:23-cv-07483, the court entered summary judgment for Cocrystal Tech and closed the case. Judges determined that Kaneka's U.S. Patent No. 7,829,080, covering reduced coenzyme Q10 compositions containing any amount of coenzyme Q11, rested on an untested hypothesis rather than a patentable invention. The court noted that even Kaneka's own inventors and expert witnesses could not explain or had never studied how or why coenzyme Q11 would produce any stabilizing effect.
Kaneka's 2023 infringement suit targeted Crystal QH, now CrysQnol
Kaneka filed suit in October 2023, alleging that Cocrystal Tech's flagship ubiquinol product, then marketed as Crystal QH®, infringed the '080 Patent. Cocrystal Tech stipulated that its product fell within the literal claim language but argued throughout nearly two years of fact and expert discovery that the claims were invalid.
Ruling removes legal uncertainty for formulators and distributors
With the asserted claims invalidated, brand partners, formulators, contract manufacturers and distributors can now evaluate CrysQnolTM purely on stability, bioavailability, formulation flexibility, supply security and cost, without exposure to the invalidated patent. Company formalizes rebrand from Crystal QH to CrysQnol
Alongside the ruling, Cocrystal Tech has begun transitioning its trademark matrix from Crystal QH® to CrysQnolTM, positioning the new name as the unified global identity for its ubiquinol ingredient.
