The announcement capped a year of intensified head-of-state engagement. In a February phone call, Xi and Trump agreed to advance mutual respect and cooperation through 2026. Three months later, Trump traveled to China, where the two leaders spent nearly nine hours together and reached a consensus to build what Xi termed "a constructive China-US relationship of strategic stability." At the White House, Xi urged both sides to implement that consensus with the "spirit of driving the nail," describing the effort as neither an expedient measure nor something achievable overnight.
US foreign investment in China grew 7.8% in first-half 2026
