Blue Cross, Lyft Pledge Up to $20,000 via Pink Bluebikes in Boston

Boston – October 01, 2026 -- Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts has rolled out 100 pink-wrapped Bluebikes across its Greater Boston bike-share network, pledging $1 per ride up to $10,000 for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, with Lyft matching an additional $10,000 once that threshold is hit.

Blue Cross caps donation at $10,000, triggering a matching Lyft commitment

The fleet, split evenly between 50 classic bikes and 50 ebikes, will circulate through the Bluebikes system from October 1 to October 31. Riders need no code or sign-up; any ride on the limited-edition bikes counts toward the donation pool benefiting Ellie Fund, a Needham, Massachusetts-based nonprofit serving breast cancer patients statewide.

Beacon lights across the entire 5,500-bike fleet will glow pink through October

Beyond the 100 wrapped bikes, every beacon light system-wide will switch to pink for the month, extending visibility of the campaign across all 600 stations in the 13-municipality network, which spans Arlington, Boston, Brookline, Cambridge, Chelsea, Everett, Medford, Malden, Newton, Revere, Salem, Somerville and Watertown.

UMass Boston student artist Roberta Trindade designed this year's ribbon-inspired wrap

Trindade, who has a family history of breast cancer, created the design intended to convey strength and connection. The campaign marks its second year, following Blue Cross's first Breast Cancer Awareness bike fleet launched in October 2025.

Bluebikes has logged more than 25 million rides since 2011 under Blue Cross sponsorship since 2018

Blue Cross has served as title sponsor since 2018, during which it has funded thousands of free and discounted rides. Ellie Fund, which has operated for over 30 years, assists more than 2,000 patients annually with services including transportation, grocery assistance, childcare reimbursement and housekeeping support.

Jeff Bellows, vice president of corporate citizenship and public affairs at Blue Cross, said every ride on the pink bikes helps fund critical services for patients and families across Massachusetts.
