Indianapolis – September 29, 2026 -- Chip Ganassi Racing (CGR) has signed Danish driver Christian Lundgaard to a multi-year contract to pilot the No. 9 PNC Bank Honda starting in 2027, adding a three-time INDYCAR winner to the winningest team in series history.
Lundgaard brings a career-best third-place championship finish to CGR's 2027 lineup
At 25 years old, Lundgaard has 16 podiums and 21 top-five finishes across 87 career INDYCAR starts. In 2026 he won at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course and Road America while securing his career-best third-place finish in the championship standings and his first oval podium. He joins teammates Alex Palou and Kyffin Simpson at CGR next season.
PNC Bank extends a partnership dating to 2013
PNC Bank, which has backed the No. 9 car since 2018 and CGR overall since 2013, will continue as primary sponsor. The pairing has produced six INDYCAR championships, two of them with the No. 9 team. PNC operates roughly 2,300 branches and employs about 58,000 people, ranking among the largest U.S. financial institutions.
CGR's 18 INDYCAR titles rival the NBA's all-time franchise record
Chip Ganassi Racing has captured 18 INDYCAR championships since 1996, matching the NBA's all-time franchise record and exceeding every NFL franchise and leading organizations in Formula 1 and NASCAR. Only the New York Yankees (27 titles) and Montreal Canadiens (24) have won more among North American pro sports record holders, and CGR achieved its total across just 31 seasons.
Lundgaard entered INDYCAR in 2021 after three seasons in Formula 2, where he won multiple races and scored nine podiums, and a stint as an Alpine F1 Team simulator driver. He took his first INDYCAR podium in 2022 and his first win in 2023 at Toronto, becoming the first Danish driver to win an INDYCAR race.
"We know he's capable of accomplishing even more in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES," said team owner Chip Ganassi, noting the team's track record of developing young talent into championship contenders. Lundgaard said the move to the No. 9 car represents an opportunity he has worked toward throughout his career, adding he aims to compete for wins, championships and the Indianapolis 500.
