Benguerir, Morocco – September 20, 2026 -- Envision Energy has energised Morocco's first large-scale lithium iron phosphate battery storage system, a 25 MW / 125 MWh unit installed at OCP Green Energy's Benguerir mining site.
System cuts peak-hour electricity costs by roughly 25% at industrial site
The battery storage system, supplied and commissioned by Envision Energy under a contract signed in late 2025, shifts surplus daytime solar power to peak consumption hours. The company integrated the BESS with the site's solar generation, grid conditions and industrial load profile, and the system is now undergoing testing before entering commercial operation.
Five-hour storage capacity backed by $20 million from Clean Technology Fund
With five hours of storage duration, the system is designed for a 25-year operating lifetime with daily charge-discharge cycles, functioning as an industrial energy management asset rather than a short-duration grid tool. The project received USD 20 million in funding from the Clean Technology Fund, managed through the African Development Bank Group.
OCP Green Energy CEO frames storage as extension of industrial energy strategy
Omar Kadir, CEO of OCP Green Energy, said storage allows the company to reconcile variable renewable output with continuous industrial demand while strengthening supply reliability. He added that the technology could help integrate renewable energy more smoothly into Morocco's national power system by bringing added flexibility and resilience to the grid.
Project supports Morocco's 2030 renewable energy target of 52% installed capacity
John Lee, General Manager of Envision Energy for the Middle East and Africa, said the energisation demonstrates the reliability and cost-effectiveness of integrated renewable-plus-storage solutions in industrial settings. The Benguerir installation is positioned as a benchmark for industrial decarbonisation projects across Africa, aligning with Morocco's target of sourcing 52% of installed electricity capacity from renewables by 2030.
