Chisinau – September 18, 2026 -- Four Moldovan banks -- Moldindconbank, FinComBank, EuroCreditBank and Victoriabank -- have begun accepting digital identity credentials from EVO, Moldova's national government app, letting clients verify identity without presenting physical documents.
Banks replace paper ID checks with QR-code verification
Under the new integration, customers confirm identity by scanning a QR code and consenting to share only the specific data a bank requests. The verified information transfers digitally, removing the need to photocopy identity documents or manually re-enter data at branch counters.
Thirty organizations are onboarding to Moldova's digital identity network
The Moldova eGovernance Agency opened EVO integration to public and private entities on April 1, 2026. Since then, 30 relying parties have entered various stages of connection, including one of Moldova's largest telecom operators and the National Bank of Moldova. At least 20 organizations are expected to be fully operational by the end of 2026.
Nicoleta Colomeeț, Director of the Moldova eGovernance Agency, said the banking rollout marks a milestone because trusted identification is central to financial services, and the agency now plans to extend the ecosystem across additional public and private sectors.
Moldova tests EU-compliant credential formats with four member states
EVO is built to align with the European Digital Identity Wallet framework, supporting cross-border credential use. As a member of the WE BUILD consortium, Moldova has tested its digital ID in the European PID format and its digital driving licence in the ISO mDL format alongside partners from France, Hungary, Austria and Belgium. Separate interoperability testing inside Moldova brought together teams from France, the Netherlands, Croatia, Romania and Ukraine.
EU candidacy drives Moldova's push for interoperable digital infrastructure
As an EU candidate country, Moldova has already integrated into European systems such as SEPA and the "Roam Like at Home" roaming initiative. The EVO wallet extends that European alignment to digital identity verification, positioning Moldova's credential infrastructure for eventual cross-border recognition within the EU's digital identity ecosystem.
