Hampton, Va. – September 18, 2026 -- Hampton University's 2026 Homecoming, running October 18-25, is projected to generate between $8 million and $10 million in direct and indirect economic activity across Hampton and the surrounding Coastal Virginia region, according to the University.

Visitor traffic climbed sharply during the 2025 celebration

New analytics from Placer.ai show Hampton's campus generated approximately 96,000 visits from an estimated 40,800 visitors during the October 19-26, 2025 Homecoming period. Campus visits rose 16.5% year-over-year, while unique visitors increased 18.3%. The average visitor spent more than five hours in the campus area.

Alumni travel from major U.S. metros to attend

While Coastal Virginia supplied the largest visitor base, Placer.ai data recorded substantial attendance from Washington, D.C., New York, Richmond, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Raleigh-Durham, Chicago and Los Angeles, indicating that Homecoming spending draws on a national alumni network rather than a purely regional one.

Spending extends into hotels, retail and dining

Placer.ai visitor-movement data identified Peninsula Town Center as among the most frequently visited destinations tied to Hampton visitors, alongside restaurants, coffee shops, convenience stores and major retailers. Embassy Suites by Hilton Hampton Convention Center ranked among properties visited immediately before or after campus, illustrating movement between the University and the local hospitality sector.

Statewide tourism trends reinforce the local impact

Virginia visitor spending reached a record $36.2 billion in the latest reporting period, or approximately $99 million per day, according to the Virginia Tourism Corporation. Hampton's Homecoming activity reflects that broader pattern at a localized, weeklong scale.

A Council of Independent Colleges in Virginia (CICV) report found that graduates of its 28 member institutions, including Hampton University, generated an estimated $515 million in annual economic activity across Virginia during the 2024-2025 academic year.
