BOMA Study: Building Operations Generate $610B, Support 3.9M U.S. Jobs

Washington – September 18, 2026 -- Operating and maintaining commercial buildings across the United States generates $609.9 billion in annual economic output and supports 3.9 million jobs, according to a new market study released by the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) International.

Building operations deliver $2.22 in output for every $1 spent

The 2026 Market Study, covering office, retail and industrial properties in BOMA's 79 U.S. markets, found that $274.9 billion in annual building operating expenditures contributes $344.4 billion to U.S. GDP. The same spending generates $219.4 billion in personal earnings, with total economic output reaching $2.22 for every $1 invested in operations once direct, indirect and induced activity is counted.

Hampton, Va. – September 18, 2026 -- Hampton University's 2026 Homecoming, running October 18-25, is projected to generate between $8 million and $10 million in direct and indirect economic activity across Hampton and the surrounding Coastal Virginia region, according to the University.

Visitor traffic climbed sharply during the 2025 celebration

New analytics from Placer.ai show Hampton's campus generated approximately 96,000 visits from an estimated 40,800 visitors during the October 19-26, 2025 Homecoming period. Campus visits rose 16.5% year-over-year, while unique visitors increased 18.3%. The average visitor spent more than five hours in the campus area.
