NTT and Cailabs Sign MoU to Link Optical Ground Stations to Data Centers

France -- NTT, Inc. signed a Memorandum of Understanding on September 17, 2026, with France-based photonics company Cailabs to explore direct optical links between satellite networks and terrestrial data infrastructure.

NTT would integrate coherent and network control technology into Cailabs ground stations

The companies will examine adding NTT's digital coherent technology and network control technology to Cailabs' optical ground stations (OGS). They will also study connecting selected stations to nearby NTT data centers over NTT's All-Photonics Network (APN).

The network control technology automatically bypasses ground stations rendered inoperable by weather and coordinates multiple stations with the APN to keep communication reliable.

Partners plan a phased technical approach starting with demonstrations

The phased approach begins with demonstrations and initial communication capabilities. It could later evolve toward higher-capacity coherent optical communications. The partners will also explore orchestration capabilities that coordinate ground stations and terrestrial network resources. That work is meant to define an end-to-end architecture linking satellites, optical ground infrastructure and terrestrial data networks.

NTT ties the project to its IOWN vision and C89 space brand

The initiative applies NTT's IOWN (Innovative Optical and Wireless Network) technology to the space sector. NTT says the collaboration could grow into a broader network of optical ground stations connected to its data centers. That network would support future commercial services under its space business brand, NTT C89.

The source attributes the move to expanding satellite constellations and rising data demand. Optical communication is expected to complement conventional wireless links between satellites and the ground.

Cailabs CEO Jean-François Morizur said the shared objective is to turn high-capacity optical communications into "scalable infrastructure for future satellite services." Minako Tsumenaga, NTT's Senior Vice President and Head of the Alliance Division, said the partnership will accelerate global expansion of optical communication infrastructure in the space sector.

The MoU sets out an exploration phase only. The source discloses no financial terms, deployment timelines or commercial service commitments.
