Nashville – October 01, 2026 -- Sound Physicians has appointed Sergio Zanotti, MD, FCCM, as Chief Executive Officer of its Critical Care specialty, placing him in charge of programs that treat more than 170,000 critically ill patients annually.
Zanotti takes over strategy for a specialty treating 170,000 ICU patients per year
In the role, Dr. Zanotti will oversee operations for Sound Critical Care, working with regional and specialty leadership as well as hospital and health system partners nationwide to implement evidence-based clinical programs. He will also continue supporting physician leadership development across Sound's other clinical specialties.
Zanotti is board-certified in Critical Care Medicine and Neurocritical Care
Dr. Zanotti received the Barry A. Shapiro Memorial Award for Excellence in Critical Care Management in 2022, jointly presented by the American College of Critical Care Medicine and the Society of Critical Care Medicine. He has also received multiple Presidential Citations from the Society of Critical Care Medicine and teaching awards. He is a graduate of Universidad Nacional de Asunción in Paraguay and completed his residency, chief residency, and critical care fellowship at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago.
Outgoing CEO Stephen Matchett will stay on in an advisory capacity through 2026
Dr. Stephen Matchett, the outgoing Chief Executive Officer of Critical Care at Sound Physicians, will support the leadership transition through the end of 2026 and continue advising on special projects and strategic initiatives. Matchett said he has worked alongside Zanotti for years and has confidence the critical care operations will continue to thrive under the new leadership.
Zanotti has authored more than 100 publications and edits major critical care references
Dr. Zanotti has written more than 100 articles, book chapters, and abstracts, and has served as Editor-in-Chief of the Yearbook of Critical Care Medicine and the Society of Critical Care Medicine Self-Assessment in Adult Multiprofessional Critical Care. He also hosts the "Critical Matters" podcast, which covers topics in critical care practice.
