BYD's 20-Year Chip Bet Pays Off as China Pushes Auto Semiconductor Localization

Taipei – September 09, 2026 -- A new DIGITIMES Intelligence report finds that BYD's Xuanji A3 smart-driving system-on-chip has entered scaled production on a 4nm automotive-grade process, marking the culmination of a semiconductor strategy the company began building more than two decades ago.

BYD's chip roadmap moved from power devices to 4nm smart-driving silicon

BYD's semiconductor efforts started with IGBT and silicon carbide (SiC) power devices for electric-vehicle control systems, according to the report. That foundation has since expanded into higher-compute automotive SoCs, positioning the Xuanji A3 as a flagship product of a vertically integrated manufacturing model spanning chip design, wafer fabrication and mass production across multiple in-house fabs.

Export controls since 2022 have accelerated China's domestic chip push

U.S. and allied export controls introduced from 2022 onward were designed to limit China's access to advanced semiconductor technology and manufacturing equipment. A March 2026 analysis by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) found the restrictions have instead accelerated adoption of domestic chips and equipment while strengthening coordinated government-industry efforts toward semiconductor self-reliance.

DIGITIMES Intelligence notes that automakers only now accelerating custom-chip strategies in response to supply-chain pressure start from a different position than BYD, which built an integrated device manufacturer (IDM) model over 20-plus years, supported by a dedicated semiconductor engineering organization.

Overlap with robotics could extend BYD's chip expertise beyond vehicles

DIGITIMES senior analyst Jessie Lin points to shared foundational technologies -- AI processors, sensors, motors, batteries and control systems -- between intelligent vehicles and humanoid robots, suggesting BYD's smart-driving silicon and algorithm expertise could translate into robotics and physical AI applications.

The report argues that as vehicles depend more on advanced computing, semiconductor capability is becoming a core competitive axis for automakers alongside software, batteries and manufacturing scale, with vertically integrated players such as BYD potentially reshaping the boundaries between automakers, chipmakers and physical AI companies.
